What is our overall philosophy when approaching portraits? We find a narrative. We approach all of our work from a narrative point of view :“What is the story?” We need something to say with the photograph. Nothing is more boring than a photograph of a face with no story. It is essential to be a need and an emotion behind it. It is not easy with headshots because of all the industry limitations on what a headshot “should be”. When meeting a client for the first time and we are looking through clothing and talking “looks”, we start asking questions like who is this person? Why do they wear this? Who wears this cut, colour, brand? When ? and Where? Most importantly, what is wanted and how to get there? This is how we start to come up with a narrative to help tell the story of each look.
So what should you wear for a business portrait? Some companies are very formal, others are completely informal. Either way, we can create headshots that suit. Your company profile headshot is an important statement about who you are. Good wardrobe choices help you feel and look confident. Treat your portrait with the importance you’d give to a first impression – it’s your personal brand. How do you want to be seen: as conventional, neighbourly, cutting edge? The clothing you wear reflects these attributes. For most business headshots, you want to present yourself as an established business professional, but with some individuality and flair. We suggest wearing clothing that is consistent with your normal professional attire, but carefully curated – as if you were going to an important business meeting.
For our professional formal business clients we suggest : men should bring a variety of shirts/ jackets / ties combos pressed and well-fitted and women have options of dresses / jacket / blouse combos; pick something that fits well at the shoulders and have different cuts, colours, and necklines. Avoid loud patterns and loud colours. You can never go wrong with a wardrobe that’s simple, upscale, and elegant. Establishing a consistent look throughout the company (“team”) gives an impression of integrity and cohesion.
Clothing for informal, friendly, approachable portraits: models, actors, artists could bring different layers from t-shits to blazer / sports jacket, if you think you want something inspiring for the day go shopping and we can keep the tags on. A positive attitude is the most attractive thing you can bring to a shoot. We love to keep our sessions light and fun.
